Keeping Afloat on a Turbulent Tide

We have recently seen many changes in the financial markets as a direct result of the current Credit Crunch including the planned merger between Halifax and Lloyds TSB and also the likelihood of other building societies following suit or being bought out in order to compete and survive. Many forced decisions will have to be made and acted upon in response. Current plans may need to be re-assessed and re-arranged in order for success.

These historic changes have resulted in the collaboration of the financial markets and the Government to ensure that plans are in place to deal with this uncertainty and to establish a strong foundation to avoid this happening again.

In these uncertain times it is equally important for individuals to carry out a review of their financial arrangements to ensure that their plans and aims remain on course to achieve their goals.

Will you still be able to enjoy your retirement at your chosen age? Are your savings still working hard for you today and are they safe? Is your mortgage still at a competitive rate? Are you paying too much for your domestic and business insurances?

Through our Independent, In-house Wealth Management Department we can help you overcome these financial concerns and any others you may have.

As a valued client of A P Robinson & Co we would like to offer you a FREE initial consultation with our Independent Financial Advisor who will assess your current situation and advise what actions need to be taken to protect your family and business.

Please contact us on 01472 345888 or email victoria.carmichael@aprobinson.biz
to arrange a mutually convenient appointment.

Must-Do Marketing

What is Your Unique Selling Point?

Yes, we are in the middle of a credit crunch, and yes, expendable cash is not as plentiful as it has previously been, but there is still some out there and people still want to spend it.

The credit crunch has caused a class divide in spending. People are split between the lowest value and price available and the highest quality and service at a premium rate.  Middle class shopping has disappeared.

What does this mean for your business? You have to choose either way.

Will you target the lower or upper class spenders?

"I can't afford to waste money on marketing."

But it is not a waste. It is vital.

It does not matter which end of the spectrum you aim for, as long as you make it one or the other. If you are going to be the cheapest, make sure you are and make sure you tell people. If you provide the best, get out there and tell people why you are the best.

You need a Unique Selling Point. What do you do that others do not? Why do your customers buy from you? What benefit do they get? Simply, what makes you unique?

In the 1860s, Sarah Nelson began making and selling gingerbread from a tiny cottage in the quaint village of Grasmere in the Lake District. It was an instant success and her business along with her secret recipe was passed down through her family until it was bought by another local family in the 1960s.

Today, the wonderful aroma of freshly baked Grasmere Gingerbread leads droves of tourists and visitors into the same shop on a daily basis. In the height of the tourist season, the queue for this unique confectionary resembles a queue at Alton Towers. TV chefs, Jamie Oliver and Phil Vickery, have used the gingerbread in their own recipes and also promote it in their books.

So, why is it so sought after and why do people make a special journey just to buy it?

Because of its Unique Selling Points:

        - Grasmere is world famous for being the home of English poet William Wordsworth thus attracts thousands of visitors
          each year

        - The recipe is over 150 years old and is secret

        - It has a rich and interesting local history

        - It is still made in the same tiny cottage where it was first produced

So, consider your own USP and then spread the word. It is no good keeping it to yourself; your potential customers need to know.

Say "Cheese"

Do you avoid miserable checkout operators? Do you begrudge giving your money to grumpy shopkeepers?

A smile is the International Symbol of Friendship; it both attracts and breaks down barriers between yourself and others. You will appear much more attractive and approachable, and it is contagious - it brightens the moods of those around you. Extensive research concludes that humans respond like for like when they encounter a specific emotional sight. If met by a frown, they will return the grimace, and equally a smile will provoke a grin.

But it is not just beneficial to those around you, it also makes you feel good because, just as we replicate facial expressions of others, our emotions correspond with our own actions. Smiling will elevate your mood despite all efforts to succumb.

If Mr Happy and Mr Grumpy are both selling the same chocolate bar at the same price in the same location, to who would you give your money?

Outstanding Young Talent at A P Robinson & Co

The innovative achievements of two of the A P Robinson & Co management team have been recognised by the Hull and East Yorkshire division of the Junior Chamber International. Emma Stamp and Lizzy Dale have been short-listed for the JCI annual "The Outstanding Young Person Awards" ceremony in the categories of Academic Leadership and/or Accomplishment, and Business, Economic and/or Entrepreneurial Accomplishment.

JCIUK is part of a global organisation, JCI, which is a personal development and networking organisation for men and women in their 20s and 30s with 250,000 members across 100 countries. Emma and Lizzy have been identified as outstanding by the judges in recognition of their remarkable contribution to the business and their self-motivation for personal development and achievement.

Emma's role as Senior Manager of Operational Services is extensive and varied. In her 11 years with A P Robinson & Co, Emma became the first accountant to qualify and quickly progressed to achieve the status of Chartered Accountant. She has since gained her practising certificate which enables her to run her own practice.

She is proactive and forward-thinking and has been instrumental in developing A P Robinson & Co. She has managed all departments of the business including the accounts teams, administration, reception, payroll, and last year spearheaded the recruitment and implementation of Lizzy in the new position of Marketing Manager. She has achieved all this whilst balancing a demanding fifty hour working week with a partner and two young children.

Lizzy joined A P Robinson & Co one year ago as Marketing Manager in the newly introduced role. She created and launched a company website and new promotional materials, giving A P Robinson & Co a contemporary, original and non-stereotypical new brand.

Through her efforts, A P Robinson & Co is now a member of five successful networking societies which has ensured the firm has a strong presence in the local business community and a substantial network of contacts.

Since October 2007, Lizzy and Emma have been instrumental in the establishment of new services that the company now offers including the introduction of a Human Resources service and the ability to offer websites to clients in conjunction with local business, Laser Red. Whilst working full-time in her role, Lizzy achieved a CIM Professional Diploma in Marketing and was headhunted by Manpower Software in London. Her role was so significant that A P Robinson & Co replaced her with a new Marketing Manager.

The awards ceremony will be held on Thursday 20th November at the Ramada Jarvis Hotel in Hull, and will be attended by the senior team from A P Robinson in support of their talented colleagues. Managing Partner, Andrew Robinson, said, "Both Emma and Lizzy's contribution to the growth and success of A P Robinson & Co has been phenomenal. They are proactive, enthusiastic and dedicated to their work, making immense achievements for both the company and their own personal development. They both deserve to win as they are truly outstanding professionals."

Launch of the Under the Tree Christmas Charity Appeal

Following the success of the last three years, we are continuing what has now become our traditional Christmas Present Appeal.

From December we will be inviting anyone and everyone to donate a Christmas present to charity. This year we are supporting Women's Aid in Grimsby. We would love to help the mums and children enjoy a special Christmas so we will be asking you to buy a present and bring it to us at our Grimsby office at Riby Square and put it under our huge Christmas tree in reception.

The ages of the children range from babies to 15 years so we will need a varied range of gifts for both girls and boys of all ages. Although we often think Christmas is just for the kids, we would like their mums to have some parcels to open as well so we are also asking for presents that suit women.

We know you are busy enough with your own Christmas shopping but it really will make a happy difference to people less fortunate than us, so please try and find the time. Alternatively, if you would like to make a monetary donation, you can also drop that into our reception; all money raised will go towards throwing the women and children a sparkling Christmas party.
